Really a reference work May 08, 2008 There is a wealth of very useful information in this book, but the layout is not as good as in the earlier version and this makes it somewhat inaccessible. Although the author warns the reader that it contains no "pretty pictures", the lack of colour pictures makes it appear unattractive to read. Is it useful? Most definitely as a reference work.
My copy was extremely badly printed - a complete lack of quality control on the part of Amazon and the publisher.

The new "John Naka" of bonsai Apr 20, 2007 While the late John Yoshio Naka's "Bonsal Techniques 1 and 2" are undisputedly the reference standards for bonsai cultivation, Pieter Loubser has written a work which can easily be compared to Mr. Naka's works. This book is filled with the most essential and detailed information about proper techniques and cultural information for any bonsai enthusiast from beginner to master. The detailed information concerning various species suitable for bonsai is excellent and provides that information in a clear and concise manner. If one were looking for a single book which addresses the heart and soul of bonsai culture, then this is certainly the one to purchase.
